In 1996 I wrote a "Guest Commentary" for Coin World in which I make a comparison between collecting US coins and collecting ancient coins.
Today I put it on the web here:

Almost seventeen years have passed and I still agree with what I wrote so long ago. Do you?

Nice. Not to feel "holier-than-thou," so to speak, but I think you really nailed it. I gave up U.S. coin collecting long ago precisely because of what you describe.

well said, sums it up for me also.

i have a lincoln pennies collection, and I'm just not really into it... can't get hyped about looking for a 1952 S or whatever. i'll still do it, but it is on the very back burner of my coin oven...can't remember the last time I got it out really.

one exception: I did get hyped finding a very nice 1943 steel cent.. because its weird, my dad talked about seeing them when he was young (mistaken for dimes), and of the connection with the war effort in ww2. as warren said, it made things go "Bing!" in my mind...and it wasn't just something to file in a slot like it was a manilla folder with my tax info in it or something.
