So, I have never really collected currency before or have any at all for that matter. I do know that if I were to buy a bill, I would like for it to already be graded etc. Do you guys think that the 1899 Silver Certificate would be a good investment/cool collectors item to start with? If I did buy it, I would probably have it shadow boxed and hung on my wall. I think its a really cool looking bill.

Please leave your opinions as well as what you think a good price to pay is. I do not really have experience with pricing currency.

Thanks!

Welcome to the world of paper money.

Now as to what others think about what you should get for your first note - well, that only matters to you. There are so many ways and reasons to collect paper money. I think you have already answered your own question here - you said "I think its a really cool looking bill."
That is all that matters - what you think!

Now for pricing, that is something you will need to research as you only said you wanted graded BUT did not indicate the grade you were looking to acquire. So my suggestion would be to search ebay for completed items that match your intended grade. Also a great reference would be to search Heritage auction archives for the same - currency.ha.com, click Reference, then Auction Results Archives, then your search parameters. You may have to sign up, but it is free.

Good luck! Jim

Thanks Jim for the quick response!

Ya, I know how paper money value in America is diminishing with our economy, but I still love the look of some of the older currency. I love history as well, and starting to grow more of a love for antiques. The 1899 $1 silver certificate is probably my favorite looking bill. Do you think it would be a cool idea to shadow box one? I think it would be a great way to display it. Not sure if anyone else has ever done that. Personally, I want to get something in the VF-XF condition. I know that's around $150-250 range I believe.

Again, how you display your note(s) is a personal thing. I have seen them in frames, 3D frames, albums, shoe boxes, you name it. It is what suits you and makes it pleasurable for you. It is all about you, not what another collector thinks or does. My only suggestion is to be sure you use good archival safe materials (Mylar D) - if the note is raw ( not graded) to house/store your note(s).

Good luck on finding that bill. Coins and Paper Currency is an addiction for sure. I have been doing it now for about 2 years, and don't ever want to look back.

Paper money collecting just might be a sickness....It interrupts my coin collecting all the time...The pictures on the front of this note, should make anyone smile....Go for something with bright paper color if you are going to diplay like this....Nice VF or better

Try to get an EF - AU specimen - even those are cheap enough.
