I have been trying to learn more about ancient coins, but I have been looking at this one for a week ... and still no idea.

I am hoping the experts here can tell be if it is real.
Also any information to what it is, ruler and age.

It seems thick and heavy, is it bronze?

Yes, it is an ancient Roman coin, and I'm pretty sure it's from a fairly scarce and hard-to-find individual. It's a brass sestertius of caesar Herennius Etruscus, son of emperor Trajan Decius. Here's the type on Wildwinds.

VCOINS shows a similar example, in similar condition, for $100.
