Here's an 1858 large date with wonderful DC's across the reverse. One of my favorite coins.. ..in high grade..

DC from the rim through the crown down to the 5 and then down through the N and E with a additional splinter DC in the middle. ..and another DC from the rim to leaf at ~ 9 o'clock.

Thanks...

All of the large dates that I've seen show a weakness in the strike at the center of the coin reverse. E and N are always weakly struck in the few that I've seen.

I do like the old coins for this sort of thing! Yours looks like an RP3 variety.

Thanks kuh_85 for the RP3 clarification. Even I wasn't sure.

The 65th Charlton does show accurate pics for us when looking at the last 8.

After checking my 64th Charlton Catalogue which specializes in the Vicky 5 cents pieces, I mis-attributed the above 5 cent coin because the catalogue only showed an RP1 and an RP2 as varieties of the large date 1858.

The 65th Charlton now shows this additional RP3 variety,..and now I have it right ,..thanks to kuh_85...

The 65th Charlton still only shows a grading of these 3 varieties up to AU 50. Does anyone here know why that is..?

.. because,...ICCS has graded some higher.

Likely, because so many MS coins like yours are unattributed,it would be difficult to estimate a population and a price point.

Yes, DBM.. that explains it well...but...

It's also confusing for those without the trends or an older Charlton or a population report. It also gives the impression (with the dash),.. that MS large dates are not out there.

It will take some time to see how the RP1's and 2's and 3's fall into the respective columns. I don't think that they trade that often,....but what do I know...

It wouldn't be a bad idea to have everyone here with "any grade" of the 1858 LD to post it somewhere here and do our own little survey for 1's ,..2's,..or 3's..

I have 1 X RP1, 1 X RP 2 & 2 X RP 3. I'm wondering if the ones that AREN'T RPd are the scarcest?
