Hello, Thank you all for your expertise in the last topics. Unfortunately all the bargains of the 2 roman coins are gone or have become too pricy by bids. These have become very common in the last 10-15 years. Balkan issue (off hand I forget the city) Roman Colonial of Philip I (aka The Arab). Twenty years ago it probably would have brought $40 or more. ebay has flooded the market and they can often be found for $10-15 in this condition. Still a nice Roman bronze from a period when these types were about to disappear and be replaced by much smaller coins. |

Looks to be an "As" of Pius with a typical 'goddess' reverse. Condition wise it is a bit weak but not too bad overall. Pius as I have mentioned is rather common (I believe he reigned 22 years) and being Mr Niceguy he is often passed over by collectors because the history of the period is 'quiet' (No news is good news !) With the exception of some military activity in northern Britain and the building of a new northern frontier wall the empire was rather peaceful. With the rough surfaces I would put this one in the $10-15 range.

A very nice condition Roman AE can easily bring $100 or much more. The coins you find too pricey might still be great bargains if they are of rare emperors (Galba Vitellius Pertinax Clodius etc) or some of the "baddies" (Caligula Nero Elagabalus) A nice VF/EF Nero can easily run 200 300 400 Dollars and up ! If you have photos of some of these 'pricey' ones we might still tell you great deal even if the price seems too high.

Republican Denarii (coin #1) I am told are 'hot' right now. The others are nothing too special and you won't be sorry later you didn't grab them.

Provided you didn't pay a lot, I think you did well. I like the large Roman Provincials especially this type. However I think the reverse on this one has been tooled which would reduce it's value. This type is know for it's weak reverse strike so IMO it has been enhanced.

Thanks Furius, I wont grab them, coin nr 1 would cost me 45 euro's, thats too much for a good bargain I suppose.
Echizento, I assume youre talking about the philipp? I think I'm more interested in pius. second one would cost me 12,5 euro, maybe too much?

Pius is very common. You can always find another one at that price. Personally I think the surface is too rough for my tastes. Compare this one with the Pius sestertius you already purchased. I would take the sestertius without any thought .

As you learn about ancients you will see that these coins for the most part are plentiful and are can be found in condition ranging from poor to Xfine and above. Of course the better the condition the more you will pay. Late empire coins can be hard for a dollar or two. Check out the thread on books, downloads and videos in this section. The information there will help you in your studies on ancients.

I leave those coins for what they are and bought 3 other (cheap!) coins via ebay.. What do you guys think? Julian II, Siscia RIC 422 (found it out by myself ;))  Unknown, any ideas?   Constantine, sear 3894 I suppose   I like the coins and I am curious whether I did well or not. |

i think your middle coin is gordian iii sesterius (maybe libertas reverse?), but wait for conformation from one wiser than man.
neat double strike there on the obverse?

The middle coin looks more like a Roman Provincial coin - Marcianopolis or Nicopolis ad Istrum etc. Looks to be double struck too which is interesting. The reverse looks like Tyche
