I can't speak on that specific coin, but the 1 Marks tend to go for way less than their cat price in the lower grades. I have bought many 1 Mark coins in AU grades for $1-2 each when their book price at XF is often in the 10-50 dollar range. With that being said, it is uncommon for me to see UNC or better coins of that type, and that's why their prices can be pretty high. That date is one of the lowest mintage dates, so it stands the best chance of bringing a high premium.

The more common dates with lower cat prices in MS63 are more likely to get close to their cat values, and this is consistent with most german series. I have seen people buying slabbed MS grade 1 Marks on ebay in the 30-60 range with some amount of regularity and it's usually in the 25-50% below catalog range that's common. On most German series, the catalog price differences are less steep than the catalog would suggest. I would be surprised if you could find a buyer for that coin that was willing to spend over 1000 bucks on it, but they are hard enough to find where it's conceivable that sort of thing could happen. I see that that coin recently sold for 323 dollars on ebay. That's sort of in the range I would have guessed. I wouldn't have been surprised if I saw a number in the 500-600 range, but 323 is in the ballpark of a realistic number.

I have seen older, nicer, and rarer German coins sell for 300-600 bucks, so I'd be surprised if someone would pay more for a fairly unglamorous coin type such as the modern CuNi 1 Mark.

Don't collect coins in such slabs myself, but that coin (1 DM 1955 G) is the most expensive one among the 1 Mark coins from this country. Mintage about 2.5 million (how many "survived" is not known). The MünzenRevue catalog lists a price of €1,500 for an "st" (BU) piece ...

For comparison, I bought the following coin on ebay for 40 bucks a month or two ago:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NGC-MS-63-1...ht_26wt_1255

The Krause/NGC price guide has it listed at 700 dollars in MS63. On MA-shops, the coins are about 40 dollars for a VZ/XF coin, but they go into the hundreds for BF/ST coins. Did I get a good deal and the US ebay just has so few buyers that these coins slip through the cracks? Or is nobody actually paying those high prices? I'm not sure, but I've been assuming the latter option of the two.

For that GDR coin, the price of $40 looks good to me. :) Now $700 looks like a very high price; MR says €330 for that year/mintmark combination in st (BU), and €120 for "vz-st" (between XF and BU). Back to the 1 DM piece, I agree - €1,500 is most probably not what you should expect to pay. However, here are two (also from Münzauktion/MA-Shops) that are in the €800-1000 range:

http://www.ma-shops.com/franquinet/...hp5?id=53855
http://www.muenzauktion.com/weller/...php5?id=9533

Problem is there is not exactly an abundance of such pieces in such a condition. So there will be prices that are higher and (especially outside Europe) prices that are lower ...
