Looks like they are upset because it's promoting a film for profit and they're not getting their cut. Now that I've seen the coin decal it looks like it would've made a cool looking coin if they minted it from scratch and engraved the surfer with a nice proof finish instead of the cheesy decal.

Went to the page you posted and they must have changed it. Not a word about any coin, so have no idea what you are referring to. Sorry.

Regarding the Silver Surfer coins, is it me, or are they actually changing the quarters reverse? It doesn't seem to indicate in the article that this is merely a sticker placed over top of the coin. This would not really alter the coin in anyway except for the glue probably not helping it's finish. While I don't see anywhere that the Franklin mint is milling the coin down, it sure does seem like that's what is going on. Not just a simple sticker, or there wouldn't be a need for the "minting process" they are talking about and anyone could virtually duplicate this......
I personally see this as much different than the other articles using stickers to promote awareness and charitable events and what not. If they are defacing the coin and altering it, I think that's ashame.

My question is this, how is this any different then what the ANA did for national coin week when they put stickers on coins and dropped them into circulation? Bryan

In a way Bryan that's what I am trying to figure out. Like I said, it seems that maybe they are actually physically altering the coin using machinery, not simply applying a sticker. A sticker can be removed, and to me you don't need a "minting process" to apply them. The article talks about the "altered coins" which to me is more that a sticker. Honestly, I really don't care, I just posted the article for information purposes only for our community.

I think the Franklin Mint may have plated the quarter in silver prior to laminating the sticker on. If anyone picks one up, be sure to report it to the forum.

They remind me of this Canadian Loon dollar I got in change about ten years ago. A local "Gentlemans Club" affixed their own metallic sticker to the front of these coins.

Strange I don't seem to recall the mint complaining about all the people who "colorized" quarters using stickers and sold them for a profit (Think Elvis TN quarters) but they are so upset about someone putting a sticker on them and then giving them away. I am also unaware of any law that forbids it unless done with fraudulent intent. I don't see any fraudulent intent here.

I think that's it's a dumb corporate ploy to get us all talking about it, quarters are alot cheaper than ads during the super bowl.

If you find one, don't forget to enter the contest. I wonder if you find one and enter, do you have to return the coin? LeAnn

I remember the "Santa Claus" dollars a couple of years ago where the ubiquitous "they" put Santa stickers over the face of Washington. I hear Santa made millions, till he got busted.
