It depends on who the emperor is and the condition of the coin.

Like an average uncleaned lot. I'm just wondering what would be the max price to pay for 100 or so.

Really depends on the condition (premium uncleaneds or slicks) and the size of the coins (folles, scyphates, etc.). Since they're uncleaned and unattributed that's really all you have to go on.
You're actually better off going for cleaned unattributed lots on Byzantines the margin is so low on them.

(P.S this is what I was referring to the whole time but I wasn't sure if I was allowed to post it.)

Nathan- I have a strong stance against buying uncleaned lots, I have bought a few but I find buying a cleaned average coin with what I want on it more satisfying.

With that being said, I would have found it very difficult to walk away from that lot. Looks like it has a couple neat types.

Looking at the lot I see that it is made up of clipped trachy, the type that are seen during the Latin Ruler period 1204-1260. Even if the coins were worth a buck a piece $26 would be an excellent deal. I would have jumped on it.

I agree with ALL of what Ancientnoob and echizento have to say.

These coins are a bit impossible, with the amount of 'patina' they currently have on them.
Nevertheless, I would have bought them uncleaned for $26.
THEN I would have taken the risk, and brushed them with a soft brass wire brush, proceeding slowly to find what may be underneath all of that gunk. May be a lot of patient fine picking on some of them, after an initial brushing.

Just one or two nice coins out of that lot could well go towards paying for the rest of them.
If it turned out that 10 or so lesser condition coins may result, you should still be ahead for $26.

I would expect that most of these coins would have found their way into my 'rat' ancient coin collection, but I would also live in the hope that three or four of them may find their way into my formal collection. I would try to identify ALL of them. Quite often, with lots such as this one, you get lots of coins of only two or three Emperors, and that makes identification easier.

Numismatic adventures are made of this sort of stuff.

Not much, if they are the crappy "Latin Empire" anonymous issues with their "identy-type" style emperors and clipped flans.
