I was wondering if anyone could tell me any more information as to how this coin ended up looking like this with the filled 8 and it looks like some extra metal around the 9?... I haven't found any information on varieties with this date, so I'm assuming it's some sort of die problem?

Pics are not that great but looks like filled by wear and the 9 has smeared a tad again with wear. IMO

Could you post a pic of the Obverse to help us see if there is much wear on this 1890?

There does seem to be some nice detail in the leaves,..but without a sharp pic,...we're kind of guessing here. I will check my 1890 to see how the 8 is ....

After looking at mine...The 8 is fully formed and normal looking.........

Some of the reverse dies back then were convex while the obverse was concave, meaning the reverse would wear faster then the obverse. Particularily the centre of the coin. Looking at the E N of cents, I would say this is what is happening.

Just checked my 1890 and the 8 is the same and also the 9..However mine is much crisper in detail, but the 0 in the date is 3/4 filled ? maybe there are different die issues as both our coins have partial things the same

I have the coin back in my safe deposit box, but it's a pcgs AU 58, so very little wear... I took a look at some of my other ones of that date, all lower grade, and 2 had clear looking, normal dates, the other one had more of what artdio was describing, with the 9 and the 0 seeming to have extra metal but the 8 was normal looking...

tfred, I just noticed that with the "e" on the reverse, you're right, that looks off also, Seems like this coin must have been one of the last ones they minted before retiring the worn die...
