Hello All,
Thank you for allowing me into your forum.
My mother gave me her coin collection when I was diagnosed with cancer so I could sell it and take my wife and son on a vacation while I was healthy enough to enjoy it.
I tried a couple of times to catalog it and failed miserably. I'm sorry to say I don't have much interest in it so I don't stay focused on it for very long.
I'm curious as to some recommendations as to how to get a fair price for it without simply taking face value without being unrealistic.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
Darryl

Darryl, First, segregate the collection/accumulation by denomination. Second, post each denomination separately. In this way the members can begin to help you.
This will take time, but we can all work it out.

Awesome! Thank you Matthew. Something as simple as that was completely off my radar.
One particular question - I got a trial version of Pro-Coin software to try and catalog it. I found that it asks for quality rating which I have no idea I became discouraged and simply put it all back in the closet.
Is this a good program that I should purchase or is simply entering it in a spread sheet by denomination adequate for my purposes?
Thanks! Darryl

Are they all US coins? Is there a majority of a certain denomination? A time period or year range? Just for a basic understanding of what you are dealing with.

Thanks Dave. JJHFL, it's been months since I pulled it out and went through it but here's what I remember from things I could identify: Several Mercury Head Dimes - all very worn 3"x3"x3" box of wheat pennys A Morgan dollarSeveral books of pennys, nickels dimes and quarters About 5-10 proof sets in plastic cases from the 80s several what look like proofs from the same era but these are in sealed plastic sleeves instead of the hard plastic cases. Does that help at all? Thanks again for the help Darryl

What I would do, if you have the ability, is post some pics of the items in groups to at least get an idea of condition. People here will gladly give you an idea of what you have condition and value wise. Then at least you have an idea of what it's worth so you can be equipped with a little knowledge if you are planning on selling to a coin shop, ebay, etc. Coin shop is quick and easy but will offer the worst return. Plus is its fast cash. ebay or similar will yield a higher return, but means lots of photos, listings, shipping, fees, etc

Quote: I got a trial version of Pro-Coin software I wouldn't suggest that you buy any software unless the collection is extensive like a thousand coins. Buy a copy of RedBook and see if any of the coins are valuable. Perhaps post pictures of any that are valuable or those you have questions about. This is a great community of helpful collectors willing to assist you.

Unfortuately selling coins is not an easy task. Coins are and should be usually considered a hobby, not an investment. Buying coins is sort of like buying a car. You pay one price and if you attempted to turn around and sell it the next day you'ld find you've lost a lot of money. Basically similar with coins. Trying to find a place to sell them is no easy task. First of all you really should know what you have and that means looking up conditions, dates, mint marks, errors, values and on and on. And to take to a dealer also is a bit scarry since they don't know yuou and you don't know them. If you know how to use ebay, might be the best way to go but again, you have to know what you are selling.
