I need some help and advice from the experts here regarding my next purchase. If it helps, I'll confess upfront that I have no idea what I'm talking about. Here we go.

I'm interested in learning the best way to procure an unslabbed example or two of Spanish silver (and maybe gold) minted in the New World in either the 17th or 18th centuries. Since these would be "working" samples that would be handled with some regularity (using cotton gloves and reasonable care), I absolutely do not want or need particularly rare coins. These simply need to be, in broadest terms, coins representative of those typically found in the New World during the Spanish colonial era.

Mods, if I'm posting to the wrong forum, please move as needed. Many thanks in advance.

No expert here, these are recently sold items from you know where.

The winning bids suprised me, especially for the full-date silver.

Thanks, fioti.

I've done a few searches on ebay and elsewhere and there seem to be plenty of coins out there to buy that meet my over all criteria.

The main problem holding me back right now is that I don't have the experience to know what I'm buying. I couldn't tell the difference between an authentic "real de a ocho" and a Chinese made Alibaba fake. I want to be clear, though. This isn't an "I don't trust ebay" issue, rather it's an I can't perform my due diligence as part of my buy decision. I'm not really sure how I fix this problem.

I'm going to let this sit here for a bit, coinwatch, but I think it'll do better in the World Coin forum. Let's see what kind of replies you get, and readdress the issue later.

Keep in mind, on this particular weekend nobody's getting much traffic.

Have you considered possibly acquiring a couple of fakes deliberately, as comparisons?

Heh! Building a "black cabinet" of fake Spanish treasure silver sounds like a pastime all on it's own. I agree it probably would be a good way to gain some practical experience recognizing fakes, though.

let me know what you are looking for i.e. 8 reales?, 2 reales?, cob style? pillar style. portrait style? I have access to literally hundreds of these types of coins from both dealers that specialize in them (and have large quantities of "common" ones I can look through) and from divers that have coins they have found. I can help set you up with whatever you are looking for and watch your back for counterfeits. I have been collecting Spanish Colonial Silver for 35 years and have built up some good relationships. Send me an IM
