Anyone that knows me well knows that I have an obsession with 5th century Roman coins, especially the tiny bronze nummi So here another recent addition in my collection of super late Romans. This example is in slightly better condition than most of this type that is usually found. Valentinian III, Western Emperor (reigned 425-455 AD), AE4 Obv: DN VALENTINIANVS PF AVG, pearl-diademed, draped bust right Rev: VOT-PVB, campgate with two turrets, Q above, RM in ex, Rome mint (struck 425-435 AD) RIC X 2424, rated Rare (seller's photo) Basically he was one of the worst people you could think of to manage the Western Empire while it was struggling to stay in existence. During his reign, most of North Africa, and most of Gaul and Spain were lost to the invading tribes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valentinian_IIIhttp://www.roman-emperors.org/valeniii.htm

Nice little piece from an 'interesting' period. He was indeed Valentinian "the Turd" And yet as fortune often smiles on the least He had the abilities of his General Aetius to save the day when it looked pretty grim for the future of the Latin alphabet. And Valentinian being true to his reputation ...... Aetius paid with his life for changing the course of History.

very very nice.I think expensive in these conditions. His election, ordered by Theodosius II, who never recognized johannes, even in order to satisfy the desires of power of Galla Placidia, inaugurates the series of puppet emperors that will continue until the end of the west empire .

Very Nice! Right now I only have 3 Roman coins (denarii from the Severan dynasty), but the late bronzes seem very interesting too! I think I might have to get my first bronze soon...

Quote: And Valentinian being true to his reputation ...... Aetius paid with his life for changing thecourse of History Sidonius Apollinaris summed it up pretty good imo: "I am ignorant, sir, of your motives or provocations; I only know that you have acted like a man who has cut off his right hand with his left." Just shows how important Aetius was in keeping the empire propped up and how foolish Val III was in eliminating him. Quote: I think expensive in these conditions. Paid $26 shipped for it Thanks all for the comments!

Really cool coin in good condition. I havent got Val III yet either. And the campgate design is one seen throughout the empire which is an added bonus.
If anyone wishes to start on these late bronzes, I have a couple of surplus monogram coins which I intend to sell. Its a really interesting period of rome.
