Hi I'm looking to purchase a lovely 1880-S Morgan dollar. It has some lovely toning. The seller identifies it as a 1880-S MSPL-65. Please grade and tell me how much I should offer.

I see neither 65 (definitely) nor PL (likely), and with the coin in a non-recognizable slab I won't even stand firm on authenticity. There's only one reason for a coin not to be in a slab from PCGS/NGC/ANACS/ICG/SEGS: the coin won't make that grade from a "real" TPG.

I'm not convinced the coin is even Uncirculated - the surfaces of the hair and cap give me pause. I do not at all like how the toning has propagated, either. It's not consistent with natural toning. I *could* be wrong, because Morgans with odd toning have surfaced before, but if it were me I wouldn't even look at this one. Do you know the name of the "grading firm" which slabbed it?

It is not done by any grading firm. It's a self-slabbed coin. The picture of the complete slab have been uploaded to the original post.

Denver West Mint. I might have known. You're right - they're not a grading firm - but they call themselves one anyway. Based on what I've seen from them the last few years (they've been on my radar since I first saw them), and the feedback I'm hearing from people who have dealt with them on other forums, you can assume this is an artificially-toned coin.

I won't even dignify them by offering a realistic opinion of grade.

Alright thanks Dave. What caught my eye about this one was the toning, which seemed amazing. Other than that the PL made it interesting too. Otherwise a common date combined with a non-certified slab would have not even caught my eye. I was hoping to get this one but I can't justify it now. Appreciate all the help.

Looks like an AU coin that has been creatively photographed. Doubt it would look as nice in hand
