How much baking soda would have been required to do this. These were in old K C baking powder tins? In a about 5 galloon crock, covered, buried deep, but at some time water did enter. The soil is generally alkaline in that area. Many untouched in remains of federal reserve bank rolls, others 70 years old when buried. Many heavily damaged and may only be worth silver value.

Any trace of baking soda would have helped contribute. However, once the air tight seal is lost, only air and water are needed for verdigris formation.

Thanks all. The roll that had powder when I removed the coins after sorting and putting them together a couple of weeks ago is now flacking off some pieces about the size of a letter. Will be interesting to see what happens as I work additionally.
