Not easy to tell from the photo.

Overdates are difficult to see, could you post an enlarged photograph of the date?

I know little about overdates on these, but I do know a bit about calligraphy,
and that is a rather odd looking '6'.
Therefore, I will go for a '6' over '5'.

My opinion of '6' over '5' is now much stronger.
That's NO' 'ow ya draw a '6'!

The top of the 5/6 numeral on this overdate http://www.londoncoins.co.uk/img.ph...1704&f=r&s=l looks a little flater to me, and the arc below slightly more irregular.

The top of the numeral on your coin looks more natural with the curve under the tail of the six more uniform.

But I agree with Sel, something about the script looks odd.
The 6 is definately not as wide as the other numbers, which might suggest a recut numeral.

Not sure about this one

Prehaps comparing it to another 1836 Halfcrown or other claimed overdate is the wrong way to look at this?

Looking at this 1835 halfcrown...

http://kingsmint.co.uk/media/catalo...rown-3_1.jpg

...the top of the 5 almost touches the mid loop of the 5

I think if this was an overdate then there would probably be some sign of the original 5 (touching the middle of the 5/6)?

I cannot see any sign of the 5 in the above coin.

I would hazard a guess that it is maybe a recut 6?
