Just got my PCGS grades on 2 ATB 5oz. Not a happy camper.

One I cleaned to remove fingprints with IPA and a lint-free cloth. When I gently wiped it, I saw a bunch of silver powder on the cloth. Came back SP64 which is about as low as I think would ever expect.

Other one took from a mint box I received that day, didn't do anything, just tossed it in the box with the lense unopened. That one came back SP68.

I was confused because of the silver powder that came off the first one, I thought the coin would have more luster and definition. It does to me. Maybe the powder acted like minute sandpaper, idk.

I wonder if using a rinse bottle and squirting would devalue the coin. Isopropyl alcohol evaporates relatively easy and the I was using was 90% (only 10% water).

I would have liked to try using can air, but now I'm really skeptical about doing anything.

I should also probably mention that I don't know how to grade. I am thinking just to buy them on auction than trying going at it by myself. I think I read here awhile back there is a saying to the effect of "cheaper to buy a 70 than to keep buying and hoping".

Unfortunately, having modern and untouched in any way, coins graded may well be an
exercise in futility.

There is a whole chapter devoted to this subject in the 2012 (10th edition) of the U.S. Coin Digest. (318 pages Krause Publications.

Although only a professional opinion, the arguments in this chapter 5 ('Don't be Fooled by High Grades'), are well presented and very common sense.

Well worth a read before submitting your next NCLT and / or proof coin for grading.

You may save yourself some disappointment AND fees.

Thanks, I put in my Amazon cart.

I read the guide momma Sue posted

http://www.coingrading.com/intro1.html

and thought I knew what to look for. The general priciples that apply to all kinds. I think PCGS has the coinfacts images by grade, I thought I could discern some of it, others not sure. I guess what I REALLY want to know is "what do I compare it too?" for brand new coins. I made printouts of the highlighted type 1 and 2 SBA's and others, but I can only guess what a perfect coin should look like.

I apologize because I came ill prepared with knowlege to draw any conclusions. I thought they would give you a summary of what they saw to come to their conclusions. Sounds reasonable if it is all 100% objective. Seems like they hide behind a cloak of darkness waiting for their next victims to get in line.

But I will say is "never wipe your coins with alcohol!" or some variation thereof.

{ia} with Sel_69l nothing modern graded is worth any more to me than an ungraded one, not even the MS70 graded coins. Ike's and SBAs as to coins made for circulation (but didn't really ever circulate) are the last coins that I would consider sending in for slabbing and only if they were better than the previous 100+ I'd looked at, even then they would have to be MONSTER coins before I'd waste money on a TPGs opinion. That's just me however, to each their own.

That's pretty much the way ch.5 of the U.S.Coin Digest puts it!
