I recently got a bag of old coins from UK, and found a coin which seems to be a 1853 one dollar, but I have checked that the 1853 one dollar is gold coin while mine is definitely not made of gold, the picture showed is just the coin. Wish you can give me some detail information, whether in 1853 there have one dollar made by other material.

xldancer: Welcome to the CCF!

Lots of these have been made as jeweler's copies, in good gold.
Although the color of this one suggests that is not gold,
I would nevertheless get it weighed.
The correct weight for a genuine example is 1.67 grammes.

If you haven't got accurate enough scales, perhaps your local pharmicist may be able to assist.

I have even heard of base metal plated gold objects to hide the gold underneath.
Smugglers have used this trick!

There is a scratch on the surface of 1853, I think somebody has already tried to find out if there is gold hide underneath. I just take the coin as an interesting product. Maybe it's just not real~~anyhow I just get this from a bag of world mixed coins, I'm disillusioned with this to be a golden coin~~~lol

Interesting piece, I with the pictures were better. I'm wondering about the possibility of a contemporary counterfeit that did not get a gold plating. (I'm assuming it isn't a piece with the plating worn off because the pictures seem to show a higher grade piece.
