YOU GUYS WILL NEVER BELIEVE WHAT MY SISTER GOT ME FOR MY BIRTHDAY OH MY PEAS AND CARROTS AIIIEEEE

. . . sorry, it's been an exciting day. We're celebrating early because I'll be in another state on "the" day. SO--

--among other things, my sister got me 10 of the 14 coins I need to complete a Victorian example set (missing: the sovereign and 1/2/3p maundy coins). IT IS AN EXCITING DAY TO BE NINA. They range from well-worn and corroded up to "the coin guy told her he'd grade it XF but I swear it's higher than that."

Here's my question: friend Google tells me that after 1887, all UK coins should be in medal orientation. The florin in this set has a 90-degree rotation--the top of the shield (the part between the words BRITT and REG, with the harp in it) is aligned with the GRA in GRATIA, instead of with Victoria's crown.

Error, not error, common error, rare error, or--I'm not an expert on these--is the shield with the lions, in the middle of "1889," supposed to be the top? I'd think the shield in the middle of the inscription would be the top, but as previously mentioned, most of what I know about British money is from reading books.

Ahhh. Dang!

I looked again and some of the earlier coins are a little wonky--like, not perfectly in medallion OR coin orientation, but a few degrees off in either direction. They're from the 1840s, though--would that be more acceptable for those dates?
