Here is a 1942 dime I pulled from my drawer today! I know nothing of coins (which is why I joined this site) and I want to learn. What grade does this look like and why? What would I expect to ask for this type of dime?

I'd go with VF.

$3 coin at the most but if you got it for 10 cents then good on you.

I would grade this fine 15. The diagonal bands are too worn for vf 20. Although this is a common coin and worth silver value, it is still a great find in circulation. It is one of my favorites.

Its Fine for sure; all Mercury dimes are nice finds especially since they are silver.

Almost any Mercury dime is worth a minimum of $3 and naturally the better the grade, the higher the value. Yours is probably a F-12 approximately. Due to it being a Phily Minted coin and a 1942 the value is not the highest of Mercury dimes. Yet if you got it in change, you did great.
