I ordered a couple of coins from my post office. SO I went to pick them up, didn't really examine them ( my bad). So I got home and look at my devil's brigade coin and saw a scratch on the E from FORCE at the bottom of the coin. I opened the holder and notice it wasn't a scratch as it's raised from the coin.

Could this be a die crack ? It also looks like hair, but if it was a hair it wouldn't be raised would it? The line goes under the E not over.

Just wanted to share.

First off, it's certainly unusual for such a noticeable issue on a proof coin's surface to escape from the Mint. Quality control on "collector" coins is typically rather good.

Please note, I am offering the following thoughts with the caveat that I'm not an expert in error coins.

Considering your observation that the "scratch" is raised, it would appear to rule out a "struck-through" error; such errors occur when a foreign object (for example, a piece of string) gets between the die and the planchet during striking. Such errors can create a depression in the coin's surface, not a raised area. The die, being hardened and stronger than a "soft" planchet, is often not damaged in these cases.

I don't think your coin is the result of a die crack, but rather a die scratch. Like a crack, a scratch in the die would create a raised surface on a planchet when it is struck. A die scratch can happen in a variety of ways, for example, when the die was being polished by a mint worker. Another way it can happen is if a piece of wire (or something similar) got into the striking chamber and was in place when a coin was struck.

A possible scenario for your coin: during the striking of a previous coin, a piece of wire fell into the striking chamber. When that coin was struck, the die was scratched. When your coin was struck, the scratch/incused line on the die created a raised line on your piece. If this is the case, it's likely that your coin was not the only one produced from the scratched die. We'll have to wait for other reports to know if more escaped the mint.

Hope that helps!

or it could possibly have happened during the process of making the die?

Thanks for the info, and it would be logical a die scratch.

after reflection a die crack ( I no expert) wouldn't be logical as it does a complete loop over the P, so if it was a crack the center of that loop would've probably chipped.

Let's wait and see if another member got one like this.

Could be a retained strike-through... does it go right over the letters (devices)?

I'm no expert kenney, but to me that coin has a defect.

If it was mine, I would try and have it replaced.

By the way I have noticed, based on the numerous reports of defective coins on this forum and the other, that the RCM's quality control has really taken a nosedive of late.
