That 1904-S in MS66 DMPL woul've been a $100,000 coin if they could even find one, instead of a VF $100.00 buck coin

the top ten would be so far apart from each other that there would be no reason to even mention the last 6 grading services. In my opinion there are 3 very good grading services (NGC,PCGS,ANACS) then you have one other one that slips back a little further from the pack (ICG) especially with moderns but do pretty good with classic coins, the rest of the grading companies have so far of a gap between them and these 4 there not worth mentioning

I couldn't even list the top 10 "honest" grading companies. There aren't that many.

As others have stated, the top four are NGC,PCGS,ANACS, ICG. I believe that PCI is trying to "get itself together" & has gained "instant respectability" by appointing noted numismatist and author, J.T. Stanton, a leading respected expert in the coin community,as its new CEO. A specialist in die variety and error coins, Stanton is the co-author with Bill Fivaz of The CherryPickers' Guide to Rare Die Varieties and has authored numerous articles and videos. He also has served as an instructor at the American Numismatic Association's ( ANA) Summer Seminar for more than a decade. Stanton has served on the boards of governors of ANA and the Combined Organizations of Errors Collectors of America (CONECA), serving as president of CONECA from 1987-90.

PCI has a lot of improving to do, I wouldn't put to much credence in their MS 66 and 65 dollars, because most of them are 64s Theres one guy on ebay, who lists all of his coins at MS67, I bought one for kicks, and it was about AU58 with a gouge, I got it for $30 something, and its an 1898 bullion Silver buck

I'm pretty new at this and don't have an answer. But maybe the question should be "does anyone know of a reliable website that provides a listing or rating and maybe some background on these grading services. I just bought a coin on ebay graded as MS68 by the "Numinsmatic Grading Pros" (NGP)- I initially mistook this for NGC, which I have heard of before. I can find no reference to a grading company with this name and wonder what I'll be getting. I haven't paid for it yet (only 14 bucks but still...). What's to prevent anybody from buying slabs from Coin World, making up a fancy name, self grade the coin, and then sell it on ebay using a photo that isn't all that clear.

Dingdingding! We have a winner The answer is that there is nothing to prevent that and it happens every day on Ebay Virtually all of the goofy acronyms you see on ebay slabs are just some guy in his mom's basement printing up labels on his PC printer and then placing his coins in CW holders and selling them under the guise of "an independent third-party grading service". I use the term "service" loosely since they don't actually take paid submissions so there is really no service part. The even more unscrupulous individuals use names that can be easily confused with real grading services. Some merely inflate the grade by a few points(MS63 coin turning into an MS65), others take this a bit further(EF coins slabbed as MS+), and others will slab cleaned, damaged junk and try to pawn it off as high grade MS coins using PCGS trends as pricing examples. Education is the only way to combat fraudsters like this- the more you know, the less likely it is that you will be ripped off. Unfortunately, coin collecting is a very technical and involved hobby and newbies can be burned HARD if they don't pay attention and don't "read the book before they buy the coin". BTW everett6, welcome to the forum

In my opinion PCGS is the best, then NGC and then I don't know what

I'd only trust coins in PCGS, NGC, ANACS, ICG, and PCI holders to be authentic and graded somewhat accurately, and in that order. PCI is pretty loose with some coins, and ICG is easy on moderns. That being said, most people consider the "Big 4" grading services to be PCGS, NGC, ANACS, and ICG. PCI is way behind them, but also way ahead of the rest of the pack. SEGS, NTC, ANI... Treat coins in those holders as if they were raw.

Everett, You asked "does anyone know of a reliable website that provides a listing or rating and maybe some background on these grading services." If you're looking at this post, the URL for that site is at the top of your page! There is no finer resource for knowledgeable, honest coin enthusiasts than right here.

I have seen a lot of really bad PCI overgrades. Every service puts out a few slabs that will make you say "WHAT?!?", and then either laugh or grumble, but I have seen it way too frequently with PCI. Many PCI coins don't bring any more than a raw coin in the marketplace. It is good that they are trying to do better, but they have so much junk out there with their name on it now that it will suppress their prices for a long time. Just my opinion, I know some guys who really like PCI slabs, and they are reliable with authentication and will authenticate and grade problem coins, which can be helpful. PCI is great for authenticating something like a corroded 1799 cent (sent them one myself and was very pleased to see it come back in a holder), but I wouldn't trade a bucket of rusty bolts for a PCI MS67 Morgan. Again, just my opinion, everyone is different. ~Jim
