The Red Book lists the '06 half ounce AGE with a "W" mint mark. I have one and there is no mint mark on it. Strange, huh?

carl, I'm not really set up for taking photos of coins. The light is always wrong, uploading hassle...

Point is, there's no W on the piece. I have a hunch they were all minted in West Point, just no W. Kind of like the Philly mint dropping the P. Anyway, I'm sure one of our forum buddies will know the answer.

It is probably a investment quality coin. Did you get it from the US Mint?

Traditionally, the uncirculated bullion do not display a mint mark. Only proofs and the recent collector's strikes.

AFAIK, you have noted another error in the Red Book. It should have three entries: 2006, 2006-W, and 2006-W PF.

You have a 2006 American Eagle Gold Bullion coin. It is the standard investment-grade bullion produced by the US Mint at West Point(without a mintmark) and is not purchased from the US Mint, but from bullion dealers. The RedBook listing should look like 2006(W).

The 2006 coins with the "W" mintmark are American Eagle Gold Uncirculated coins. Those were minted with burnished dies in limited numbers for the first time last year. They were available directly from the US Mint. The coins were packaged in a blue box similar to the proof bullion coins and were encased in an airtite-style round and placed in a blue velvet bag.

I did not buy it from the mint, that explains it. Thanks for the clarification. Going forward, I'll purchase from the mint, they sound more collectible.
