As the topic states, I think I'm done buying coins based on scanned images. Photos are so much more revealing.

Here is a scan from an auction I won:

To me, the 44-D and 45-D look XF or better. Both appear to have that circle hinting of mint lustre.

In hand, I took this picture:

Looks to me like the fields have be scrubbed clean. All four are the same.

Any comments are welcome, including but not limited to, net grade, value, and advice as to how to judge condition from scans and photos.

TIA.

When I buy coins on ebay, I avoid buying coins that have the "washed out" look of the coins in the scan. If the coins color is light and it the details are fuzzy in the scan, it is suspect, imo. I will generally only buy darker/natural looking coins, that way I know that they aren't cleaned even if they have a little grime!

I would agree that the coins appear cleaned from your pic. Is there a return policy? If so, I'd send them back.

I think that is a fantastic idea. I have made many a post over our short journey here alluding to this practice. Here is my latest, just a few days ago. I think it's a good rule for everyone to follow. Scans just don't cut it.

re: return policy

None was specified. But by the time I subtracted 2-way shipping, the amount I'd get back is less than melt. I think rather than open that dialogue, I'll just leave feedback like:
Coins received were same as from scans--clean & shiny! thanks

Like everything else, scans have their use. While I have never used scans to hide any problems with coins, I do use them for group pictures in lots. I also provide click-to-enlarge pictures that are large enough to grade by. I always photograph single coins. Take a look here and see what I mean. These are all scans and represent these coins very accurately:

There are sellers who do their scans in black and white instead of full color which hides problems. All of my scans are done in full color and I haven't had a complaint yet. I compare them to the original coins and only use them if they are accurate.
