I have read here that NIFC halves get dumped into circulation after the sell period is over for rolls and bags on the mints website. Well judging by the grouping I found in 3 boxes of halves I wonder if they are dumping proofs now too? Out of 3 boxes I found 30 2005 NIFC Gem BU and 18 2009 S clad proofs that don't look like they made it through the counter more than once. If I had found 18 consecutive year proofs I would have speculated that someone dumped their (or someone else's) collection but I don't think anyone (other than a dealer)has 18 2009 proof sets that they would all of a sudden decide to break out and dump.

Doubtful, you probably stumbled across someone's dumping grounds for broken up, possibly stolen, proof sets.

I remember hearing that unsold Colombian exposition half dollars were eventually placed in circulation.. so, maybe.. but I doubt it. Great finds though!

A large number of 2009 Clad Proof Sets were broken up for the Copper Cents. At the Oct. 2009 Denver Coin Expo (with over 150 dealer tables), I saw over a thousand loose 2009 Proof Cent lenses. ebay still has plenty of loose 2009 Proof Cent/Quarter/Pres. Dollar lenses, and many 2009 Proof Dimes/Nickels were used as album hole fillers due to the rarity of that year's business strike Dimes/Nickels. This leaves the Native American dollar and the JFK. Loose 2009 Proof Native American dollars are probably in greater demand than loose Proof JFK's, so guess which would be dumped? * The NIFC BU 2005's could be someone's culls from a searched bag.

Just curious, are the 2005,s satin finish (from mint sets)or BU business strikes?

Baysinger626 you are correct about the Columbian Half Dollars. There were several that were unsold so they got dumped into circulation. A few of the Isabella Quarters ended up circulated but not near as many and that's why the quarter is the more valuable of the pair.

@GR58
Having never seen a comparison on the 2 types side my side I couldn't tell you. They appear to be a dull matte satin finish however I have halves from 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 etc with the same finish and those years did not have satin finish available.

If a dealer is making up a bulk submissiion to the TPG and he's breaking up several hundred sets, what does he do with the ones that he thinks have no chance at coming back 69 or 70? If he has full rolls he might sell them to a wholesaler. Less than full rolls he may just use as change. but if he has several partial rolls he may just dump them at the bank and be done with them.

Wow, what a nice find. I may have to start getting boxes for roll searching. Almost all the half rolls I get lately from tellers are well picked over and I have found nothing of collector value.

Nice score!
I've seen my local dealer breaking sets, making rolls AND putting stuff in the cash register for change. He said he doesn't usually take any coinage to the bank but that doesn't mean someone else didn't.

So, halves are "no longer minted for circulation", huh?

Yep, that is a collector/dealer dumping the proof culls from breaking up sets. Nice find though!

I doubt if that happens because the mint can't "dump them into circulation" unless the Fed orders them from the Mint, and they aren't placing any orders for halves from the mint. And if the did do that they would show up in the annual reports as circulation coin production and they aren't showing up there.

I've got enough and don't need anymore. Older pic as the box is now overflowing 2 stories tall.
