Hey guys, I found a nice coin in which I'm interesed, its a coin of nero. Now I need your opinion wether its a genuine one (you already helped me out more than 1 time ) The reason why I'm also asking your help is because the face is not realy Nero-recognizable.. Its a tetradrachm of Antioch Edited by Dutchgulden 07/20/2013 2:27 pm

Well it appears to be an eastern Tetradrachm although it looks much different than any I am familiar with. The tetradrachms usually have somewhat 'idealized' portraits and someone like Nero is often rather good looking unlike the chubby sneering look on many Rome issues. Whether it is real or not I cannot say.

It occurs to me now that shouldn't this 'tet' have a year indicator in the reverse field ? It is a beautiful coin ..... maybe of the 'too good to be true' variety ?

I think this ones fake. I dont recognise the tree bit, the legends are incomplete including the year bit, which would definitely survive in this instance. The bust is just a little off...like someone has tried to make a perfect coin without first seeing a perfect bust to compare.

The more I look at the more it looks bad. Dutchgulden where have you been finding these coins? I would stay away from that dealer.

These two look fine to me and would be a nice addition to any collection. I really like the galley reverse on the Hadrian coin.

In which case the 'year' is mostly off the edge of the flan of this tetradrachm This coin may well be good. It does look struck not cast and the Portrait is well executed by a skilled engraver. I must withold judgement. If the seller is trustworthy and stands behind his guarantee you might have a real special find if the price is right If it is bogus well then if he will accept a return you will not have lost anything.

If you do purchase there is only one thing which I can see which needs close inspection. The photo is of the highest quality even at 300% magnification. At 10 o'clock on the obverse - 3 curls in on the head and just above the laurel there is an A shaped space in the hair. At the apex I can see something which looks like an extremely tiny sphere. Bubbles are what always plagued my castings and from experience I know they 'like' to form in corners where the micro bubbles can stubbornly adhere when the vibration method is used to remove them. If with a 10X lupe you can see a perfect sphere then I would grade it an almost perfect casting of amazing quality. And it would scare the heck out of me personally !

Personally, I was looking at the "thing" sticking off Nero's Bottom lip.

I saw that but it worries me less because it lacks the 'perfect sphere' look. A perfect sphere sitting on the surface cannot be explained away as a 'flaw'.

I like Hadrian's handle bar mustache.
The Alexandrian Nero looks good to me. It is a solid coin. What threw me off was his neck it is usually thicker but this is his early reign. He hasn't quite filled out yet.
