Okay, this guy was selling a hoard he found. Extortionate price and I assumed it was picked dry, but clearly it wasnt.

It was beautiful...thousands of high grade Gallic empire coins. Tetricus II, Victorinus...such variety. mostly one person standing left, granted. But I picked out a bunch of nice ones. Whittled it down to 7 and paid (feel free to guess the price per coin!). I found a LOT of the zoo series, but hadnt the money to do it and the guy was pretty grumpy. Eh.

So here it is:
Gallienus x4, Claudius Gothicus x2 and a Quintillus. I couldnt find the quintillus on Helveticas spreadsheets. One of the claudius II is doublestruck. All have some silvering. Some coins couldve passed for billon.

Reverses: Gallienus; Centaur, Stag, Hippocamp, Indulgentia, Claudius II; Mars in the nip, Fides, Quintillus; Concordia.

Also, a forum member wanted a roman coin so I made sure to pick up a nice one here. If anyone else wants one of these coins, pipe up. Only one of them is going into the permanent collection.

When I saw the first photo I thought to my self that they would be Ho Hum ....
But the reverses are an interesting bunch. I can't even begin to guess but if you have followed my advice (I hope !) Then I think you probably did well !

I can't break them down but I will suppose .....
$100 for the bunch

I shall make no indications as to how much I paid, but suffice it to say, I reckon I picked out some nice ones.

There were 0 culls in the lot. Mustve been filtered.

What do you guys think of the double strike? Add value or remove value? I believe its from the same die, rotated and then, oddly, restruck waaaay off center. The first strike seems a bit mushy though, perhaps it was a die striker in training.

I don't think there is a huge market for "spicy" ancient errors given that they are subject to all the hand manufactured issues - so it probably wouldn't bring a premium. It's interesting though - from an academic point of view - but a collector would probably want a "perfect" specemin.

Anything that can be attributed to a hoard is a definite + to me and I'm happy to pay extra just for the find info that comes with the coins

Certainly adds interest but I'm not sure how I feel about ancient 'errors', I'm not even that keen on the rarer modern ones. I do have some ancient errors and I've seen some crazy prices for them on ebay but unlike moderns clean, well stuck, centered ancients are usually the money spinners.

This looks like a great lot. I like number 3 of row 2. It looks like 2 coins in one. I think you did alright.

Was this "hoard" found here in England or in Europe?
If they were from here, and registered with the P.A.S. then this would add to the price.

He said that it was all declared and checked etc etc, but the grumpy fella was not in a talkative mood so I couldnt get any more info from him about it unfortunately.

Is there anywhere to look up a registry for hoard coins? I have a postumus supposedly from the wareham hoard but did not receive any documentation with it. While I know I could never prove it is from there without original documentation it would be nice to look it up.

A Long Shot, but the Best Shot is to try a search in the P.A.S. website, if it was found in the U.K. and stated to be registered, it might be on the site:

I guess he was grumpy as you managed to get a good selection.
That is his problem.

Last year I bought 25 out of 125 Gallic Empire coins that were listed on ebay by a seller.
From their Patina and the commonality of the era they were obviously from, the reigns of Gallienus-Gallic Empire-Claudius II it seemed they were from a Hoard.

I asked the seller but all he would say was that they were part of a metal detecting find by a man he bought them from, in 2006, though they were found near Harlow, Essex in 2003.

When I replied that I guessed they were from a Hoard, he never replied back!
Anyhow, I recorded them myself, even making a Pie chart to show the number of coins per emperor.
No surprised, Tetricus I was the most common.
Below are a few examples from that hoard.
First is:
Gallienus, AE Antoninianus, RIC 285, Rare
Second is:
Tetricus I, AE Antoninianus, RIC 148
Third is:
Claudius II, AE Antoninianus, RIC 109
