Hi All,

I am trying to identify these two Ottoman coins which I believe are silver and about 200 years old. The one I am trying to ID are the bigger two in the photos. One is badly worn which I know will not help!

A scale of size would be useful.
Dating on the cupped-&-holed piece appears to be 1223 (year of accession)/29 (regnal year), which would be 1836 in the reign of Mahmoud II. The "tenth series" 1.5, 3, or 6 piastre pieces would be a good match. Craig numbers, with diameter & mass per my 1981 K&M, are C#206, 2.6-3.0 g, 28 mm ; C#207, 5.6-6.2 g, 33 mm ; 208, 11-13 g, 36-37 mm. Any of these would be 435/1000 fine silver.

The second is distinctive in appearance, with the pointed outer border, the corded inner border, & that fiddlehead flourish on the toughra, but doesn't agree with anything listed in K&M for "Turkey" (or "Egypt") that I can see. It appears to indicate regnal year 29. This suggests checking other Ottoman dependencies for the reign of Mahmoud II.

Hi Publius,

Many thanks for the info. Having done a search on the net, it would indeed appear to be a 1 1/2 silver piastre coin dated 1223.

I'll take some close up photos of both shortly. I've still been unable to find anything online that looks like the other one.

Thanks again,

Simon
