As the grandson of a coal miner from this period, I find this a particularly poignant memorial to another miner whose soul was owed to the Company Store. "Payable In Merchandise Only." One of the important things that defines true legal tender: if you're not paid with it, you're a serf, pure and simple.

As Philly says also being a grandson of a working child in the mines. That got out after a short number of years yet to die from Black lung. You can understand the Molly Maguires and the other violence that came to the company towns. For better wages and to stopped being treated like property.

A great book loaded with tons of photo's as she was a relative of people of the mines. It reads like a story and not a preachy textbook.
Another one that will tell you of how it was till recently the government dragging they feet to help the people is Fire Underground; on the Centralia mine fire.
