f.g.grenny token
in 2005 ( medal detector )talk about 4 token card from F. J. GRENNY listed by breton # 836
grenny was instrumental in the formation of the ANA in that:
When George Heath decided to take the step and start a national org'n. he announced in the NUMISMATIST of July 1-15 1891 the officers personally nominated by him until an election of the thus newly-formed ANA could be properly held. Those so nominated: PRES.: W. G. JERREMS, Jr., Chicago V-PRES.: JOSEPH HOOPER, Port Hope, Ontario SEC'Y: CHARLES TATMAN, Worcester, Mass. TREAS.: DAVID HARLOW, Milwaukee, Wisc. BOARD OF TRUSTEES: C.W. STUTESMAN, Bunker Hill, Ind. ; W. KELSEY HALL, Peterbourgh, Ontario; J. S. JONES, Jamestown, NY. BOARD OF TEMPORARY ORGANIZATION: G. W. RODE, Pittsburgh, Penn.; J. A. HECKELMAN, Cullom, Ill.; and FRANCIS J. GRENNY, BRANTFORD, ONTARIO. As further evidence of GRENNY's numismatic activities, we know of 2 fixed price lists he sent out, and an ad in the July 1893 NUMISMATIST stating his desire to buy, sell or trade coins and soliciting want lists.
Ed Frossard of New York sold his collection on Oct. 10, 1893 after which Grenny seems lost to us.
He struck One personal issue in 4 metals, value 50ยข each. scarce .

Francis J. Grenny was not "lost" from 1893. He sold his coin and token collection in Frossard's auction but was still in Brantford until about 1896, when he separated from his wife and, probably about 1897, moved to California. There he started a poultry company with partner Donald Mackintosh (Grenny & Mackinsosh), which survived until at least 1904. By 1910, Grenny was raising vegetables and seeds in Arbaugh, California, and, by 1920 was likely a mental patient at the Los Angeles County Farm at Downey. He died in 1923.

Another welcome to the CCF!

I see that Grenny served in the capacity of army paymaster in the 38th "Brant" Battalion of Dufferin Rifles between 1875-85. This position seems somewhat idyllic for a numismatist!

Grenny had a long career in the militia, first as a private from about 1858, as Colour Sergeant in the 38th Brantford Battalion (Dufferin Rifles) during the Fenian Raids in 1866 (he received the General Service Medal with 1866 bar for that), then quartermaster, then paymaster from 1875. By 1883 he had been promoted to Major and he retired from the 38th in 1888. If being paymaster may have helped him find coins, probably even more important was his job as Clerk at Brantford's Post Office, where he'd have had access to coins and stamps (Grenny was a coin and stamp dealer from about 1870 to 1893). Grenny was a bigger name in stamps than in coins, having been Exchange Superintendant for the Canadian Philatelic Association and the Canadian "circuit" of the American Philatelic Association. He also hosted the 1885 Show of the Ontario Poultry Association!
