Hello everyone.

I have family in the USA who have just recently decided to buy some silver. They are older and don't know where to buy from. Can you guys tell me what online sites are the best for overall cost, shipping etc. for smaller bullion purchases. Thanks.

First have them check to see if there's a local bullion broker, not a coin shop. The one close to me beats everybody on prices. If not coin shops are OK for small purchases where online shipping cost will eat them up for small purchases.

For larger amounts there are quite a few online dealers that have reasonable prices, some more so than others. My last online purchase came from APMEX, just because they were the only one that had what I wanted.

Other, more experienced members will have some other ideas as well.

APMEX = most extensive inventory, good customer service, tends to be high-priced, genuinely nasty shipping charges, standard shipping delays.
Provident = more limited inventory, good customer service, mostly lower prices, standard shipping charges, standard shipping delays.
Goldmart = limited inventory (frequently out of stock but may or may not admit it), questionable reputation for customer service w/ horror stories easy to find,
lowest prices, standard shipping charges, inordinate shipping delay horror stories abound.
SilverTowne and Scottsdale = Middle of the road; make and sell their own silver bars and rounds. Both make/sell nice poured bars.
Kitco = The Canadian Giant... Everything pretty much standard, fairly good prices but a $2,500 minimum order.
Gainesville Coins = Do your homework and google up reviews of Gainesville Coins and National Gold Exchange of Tampa FL (their previous name). Also
search Gainesville Coins in this forum. Stories of damaged goods, refusal to accept returns and bad news customer service are easy to find.
eBay = Some bargains, mostly the highest prices, everything you could imagine is for sale, forgeries/fakes/copies/counterfeits ALL OVER THE PLACE,
mostly pretty high per coin shipping charges, fast shipping (especially from the scammers), major caution and extreme due diligence are required here.
If/when using ebay, DEFINITELY use a credit card through PayPal. It will (hopefully) provide protection against scammers.

That's most of the "biggies" although there are many others. Happy hunting and shopping!

Edit: I forgot the most important one of all... Your relatives should see if there's a decent local coin shop in their area. For all the online availability that's offered
today, I still spend most of my PM $$ at my LCS. Bad news LCS's can be horror stories, but the good ones can be the very best places to do business.

Thanks for the quick responses. They are in the Yakima valley in Washington. I know there is a coin shop in Yakima. Just not sure if that would be better than online. Was wanting something reliable because I know they wouldn't be able to decipher if it was a fake.

Check the US Mint and ANA websites. If the LCS is a US Mint dealer &/or ANA member you should be safe with them, but that wouldn't indicate anything about
price levels. They'll have to check those in person.

Well, I made my APMEX order on Monday and received the package on Saturday, not too long a wait. However the shipping cost me a Jackson on 8 slabbed ASEs and 2 of the NGC coin vaults, they surely didn't lose money on shipping.

Again, if they have it in stock my bullion broker is by far the best deal around. When silver was sideways in the mid to upper 20s I was getting BU and near BU Morgans for $31, and they had several tubes I was cherry picking from.

But since the fall of silver recently they got wiped out of those before I could get back. But they're still the best on 90%ers.

The OP's family is fortunate that Washington state has a sales tax exemption for all bullion purchases, big and small. Sine there's no expense for shipping or tax, you can afford to pay a higher premium from a local coin/bullion dealer.

I would go with Provident.
Low prices
