Long time no post! I was looking at an old green label PCGS MS-62 1890-P and I found it's a late stage VAM 15A (has the nice die crack under the date). I want to sell it, but have no idea how much the VAM would add to the value. VAMworld notes that this is an I3 R6. Can anyone give me an idea of what this coin would bring on ebay (or should I sell it elsewhere?) Also, where would you start the bidding on this coin? Thanks for any help! Ben

Ben, I'm at work and have a 2012 price guide showing it at $600 in MS62. But it's not that simple. VAM sales are a bit soft these days. If you find someone with $$$ and are burning desire for an 1890 VAM 15A, then you might get something close to $600. If you're planning on listing it on ebay, be sure to get good pictures of the major pick-up points and that die crack. Since this isn't attributed on the label, potential buyers will need to make sure it's a 15A. Realistically I would say you might get half that price if someone needs a 15A.

Too bad PCGS does not recognize that (and a lot of) VAM(s), but ANACS does, if you really want to "put it on the label". A true VAMer will know what to look for and I would keep her in the PCGS slab.
Let's see what it looks like!

Another way of "putting it on the label" is to take advantage of John Baumgartner's VAMseal service - he'll attribute the coin and replace the rear label with his own identifying label. He is universally recognized throughout the VAMming community for his work, and his (non-graded) raw coin VAMslabs are taken as gospel. Heck, Heritage Auctions sleeves coins for their lot label to avoid covering his.

Great info! Thanks for the help. I'm checking all of my Morgan and Peace dollars now and have found several of them to be VAMs. I'll be posting this coin on ebay in the next week or so. It's really nice to hit a VAM like this one when searching coins you just picked up for your collection. I'll post photos here as soon as I get some new lighting equipment I ordered. It should really help on the pick-up points. Ben

That's very true. ALL my coins Morgan and Peace dollars ARE VAMs. So you're correct. I'm looking for the rare and interesting VAMs. I did get in my Ring-Flash today and it makes ALL the difference. I'm still learning how to use it, but here are a few photos that show the pick-up points. MAN the die gouges on the reverse are hard to pull out. I'll work on that shot again tomorrow, Ben

Very nice coin 1st off. I will confirm whats been said about the price guild, many things are soft in the market currently. I have spoke with a few major collectors as well as dealers that see what the market is doing. You get a mixed bag of answers depending on how the given day is running. What seems to be a very lasting theme and can be confirmed with the last few "Major Auctions" are that! 1) Real Rare Vams are bringing very strong dollars! 2) Condition sensitive rarities are doing very well across the board also. Things like High Grade 1888 O Scar Face, Hot Lips, 1899 Micro "O" Morgans in AU-58 and up are also selling for out of the guild as well. Many of the 1878 P 8 TF in harder grades are bringing very good money as are The Vams that are not part of a given list "But are collected by almost every mid level Vammer in the ( I Have to Have 1 Of Them "COINS") 3) Better grade List coins are holding their own for the most part and in some cases sold for top guild price or a bit more. (The big key here and the THEME) Top Grades! Coins like the 1891 O Vam-1a1 and the 1888 O Hot Lips are the best 2 VAM's to look at when it comes to this market. Both the 91 O V-1a1 and the 88 O V-4 are as common as dirt in (Un-Grade-able) and almost as common in VF-25 grades, where a sale premium should be paid, (But be selective)a better one will be along soon!.
