Dear coin community friends,

I have this 1871 Spanish 5 Pesetas, and it is countermarked G.P for use in the portugese colony of Azeros.

There are many fakes of this coin, can you help me determine if it is real or fake?

It weighs 25g.

regards.

With the weight correct and even the star date 1872, nothing seems to indicate a fake. The counterstamp also seems genuine.

Isn't it rather counterstamped for use on the Portuguese Azores islands? (They're not a colony).

Looks pretty good to me as well.

The back side opposite the stamp indicates it was applied over a very rough surface. You should check that against graded originals to see what the anvil surface texture was.

Counter stamp strike pressure looks good.

The stamp does not appear to be 100% impressed given essentially no wear obvious on the reverse. So the uppermost elements in the crown - may show original coin surface. A good place to look for proof of how the stamp was applied.
