Hi everyone,

I just want to know what do you think about this 2008 alpine skiing quarter. This is not the coloured Petro-Canada one. Is it a mule or something ? Do any of you have a similar coin ?

Thanks !

Many believe these are Petro Canada mules that have received an acetone bath.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

Wow.

Would SPP's methods be able to detect that?

If it's a Petro-Canada, wouldn't there be a "Numismatic BU" description like this one ?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-Mule-2...em232d17b3b0

ICCS would have seen the "Numismatic BU" quality, even if the coin had an acetone bath, no ?

Thanks for all your comments !

I have these coins exactly as yours, Alex. So the same question here, why the ICCS certified coins had acetone bath?

If these "ICCS" are counterfeit, how to tell?

Could also be a back-door. There are a couple of possibilities there.

Petro-Can die pair on business planchets
Alpine reverse used in 2008 paired with a proper 2008 obverse

Both of those could be detectable. Higher quality die for the former, and a die state mismatch for the latter.

I agree with DBM. These were only issued in the petro cards. Probable acetone.

ICCS is not perfect and there have been tons of posts in regards to them certifying numismatic BU as MS...
It's not like these came from high end proof or specimen sets. They were uncirculated. A step above a roll.

Actually. All I'm finding in relationship to these coins is MS grades. The wheelchair mule as well only found in sets is graded MS.
