IMO ...it all comes down to all the coins and currency we have is for commerce. Not for collectors or the likes and dislikes of any individuals.
In my lifetime (55 years) I have never seen the $2.00 bills or half dollars ... or even dollar coins used very widely.
The only use that comes to mind, was casino slot machines, when they used coins, used a lot of half and dollar coins.
In the past changes have been tried .. but failed.
Two, three, Twenty Cent and small dollar coins have all failed, because the majority of Americans do not want to use them.
I do understand that changes should be made, to save tax payer money. What I don't understand is why doesn't the government start a program asking all citizens to turn in their spare change. There are billions of coins sitting on dressers .. cans and jars all over the country. If they had a program where two or three times a year, people knew they should turn in their coins .. to save tax money. They might get people motivated to do so .. sort of like recycle program.
Also think how this would help the collectors. There would be lower mintage coins, just like in 2009 when the economy got bad and people were turning in coins to help pay the bills.
Back to the $2.00 bill and half dollar coins .. I do like them, and I do collect them ... but people are not going to use them. Given the choice, most people that are not collectors will take two quarters over a half dollar.
Many people who do take the half dollar, do so because it is different and save it .. even though they are not collectors. Which again defeats the main purpose of coins, and also cost the tax payer money.
