I have an Elizabeth 1 hammered half groat and noticed that the reverse does not lineup with the obverse when flipped or turned, it is aligned at about ten past 12 to the obverse. Was this a common feature of hammered coins?
Given that the dies on hammered coins were lined up by hand, I would say "yes", die rotation can vary quite a lot in this series. I'm not even sure if they were specifically aiming for any particular orientation. Just glancing through my English Hammered collection, 90 degrees seems to be the commonest alignment, but there's just about everything between 0 and 360.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
