Went to the LCS yesterday afternoon and took a look around. Saw this sitting in a display case and it just spoke to me. I have never been a huge fan of gold as a metal (always liked silver personally) and never have thought about buying a gold coin in the past, but this one...I just had to have it. I don't know why, but it needed to come home with me. It's the first gold ANYTHING I have ever purchased, so it's definitely special! Think I should send it to get graded/slabbed?

Personally, I'm not a fan of slabbing unless it is very rare coin. I like my coins raw. obviously there are folks that won't purchase anything unless its encapsulated and graded by a reputable TPG. there are two sides to this one and I think it comes down to personal preference. its not super rare and in the range of $350-375 so your slab cost may be more than 10% of the value of the coin. to me, its not worth it.

Yeah, I am not a fan of slabbing either, but my big reason for considering it is simply to protect the coin. It's already in a flip but I want to make it virtually impossible for someone to put their grubby fingers all over it. That being said, I love the personal experience of holding something like this in my hand (even in a flip). I never buy slabbed coins for this reason - it takes the emotion out of it for me. But being gold, this would be a great way to maintain its current state. Idunno, I will sleep on it and see what others think when I get up. :)

Congratulations on your first gold purchase, skyshark124! I have a few gold pieces and the Indian Head Quarter Eagle is definitely my favorite. The recessed design is so unconventional and of course the devices themselves are beautiful in their own right (BLP's eagle depiction is my favorite on any US coin).

I have to agree with panzaldi about slabbing. I too am not a big fan of slabbing especially since there are other options for more common coins. I use a brand of coin holder called Gaurdhouse: they are a hard plastic case with a foam insert. They only come in modern US coin sizes but since the inserts are foam they will accept slightly larger coins: this quarter eagle is only 0.1 mm bigger than a modern dime, so it fits nicely in a dime holder (pretty much any dime holder). You can also find other 2x2 hard cases but my experience with those is that the coins can slowly spin around inside--the Gaurdhouse holder keep the coin positioned how you want it.

Definitely a good idea to look into those then! I am really interested in protecting the coin, but like I said before, I don't like the loss of "personal" connection with a coin that happens when one is slabbed. Something the size of a 2X2 or even an air-tite would foot the bill nicely and still give me that experience with the coin.

The Gaurdhouses just snap shut, they are easily opened again for photography or any other reason.
