Hi Folks, some of you may remember several threads about getting youth involved in the hobby and a Dollar type set giveaway. I have pulled those threads to avoid any confusion and wanted to announce this update. Many of you responded with some great ideas that we will incorporate in future endeavors. We proposed a contest with a short essay being submitted and judged on anything to do with coins. We did not get any responses and many pointed out the contest was done at a sort of bad time of the year being summer and all and reaching a very limited audience. We were lucky enough to have a member who happens to be in a position to do something over the summer that reachs a large audience! As some of you know, MorganFred is involved in Scouting. He happens to be at summer Scout camp now and is in a position to run "five" weekly contests awarding one of the Dollar type sets each week for the next five weeks. He will devise the "contests" as he goes and report back to the forum on how things went. I think this will be fun and give us ideas on how to run future contests. Fred is going to make presentation cases for these prizes, letting the kids know they came from this forum. We have offered Fred any help We can give and hope you will do the same! Keep thinking of new ways to get the younger folks involved! Fred, thanks for doing this! Sincerely, Susan & Mike

While I am waiting for a meeting later this week with the Camp and Program Directors to discuss this project, I am envisioning a weekly contest (fortuitously, there are five sets and five weeks of camp). This would not be your father's award of a blue ribbon for the largest/most and an "Attaboy", but a Kodak moment for some bright/ambitious/persevering/lucky Scout (for non-BSA persons, the age group is 10.5 to 18 with most campers being between 10.5 and 14) with an incentive attached to the award. One idea I had is that to qualify, a Scout must earn the next highest rank while at camp (would be a hat drawing or committee selection for multiple qualifiers) with names submitted by their Scoutmasters. The intent is to award a Scout for achievement, so the name of the award probably should include the word "achievement".

I'm open to any and all suggestions; nothing is yet cast in concrete. I'll also keep the forum informed although due to my 26/8 schedule, responses might be a little delayed.

Rest in Peace

As an update, the Camp Director and Program Director both enthusiastically responded to the proposal. My suggesting to tie the awards to weekly achievement was met with overwhelming approval. Each Scoutmaster of each Troop will submit to the awards committee his/her nomination of the Scout who has achieved the most (in any field, not just advancement) during the week he has been in Camp. The committee will meet on Friday afternoons and select the deserving Scout from the nominations. (I decided upon a three-member committee consisting of myself and the Camp and Program Directors since I felt uncomfortable doing it the selection myself.) The award will be presented at the Friday evening closing campfire.

I've already drafted a suitable-for-framing certificate and, fortuitously, as a small tourch, I happen to have some high-rag parchment paper on hand for the certificates.

The camp season begins 3 July, so the first award will be presented 8 July.

Rest in Peace

Hi Folks! The letter below is an Update from MorganFred about the coin set awards at scout camp....Thanks Fred.

This is the third time I've started this thread in the past three days, but have been interrupted each time - an inkling of how busy it gets here in preparation for the Scouts who show up on Sunday 3 July.

The award has received very enthusiastic responses from the key people (Camp Director and Program Director) and we've expanded on the "outstanding achievement" theme to include leadership, special service and other projects above what is required for ranks or merit badges, and Scouting attitude in addition to possible rank advancement. In other words, as the award's name and certificate state, Outstanding achievement is to be recognized.

I've organized a committee of three or four (Camp Director, Asst Director, and Program Director, in a addition to myself) to select the award winner from the nominees submitted by the Scouts' Scoutmasters. Format is a single paragraph written by the SM detailing his Scout's (one nominee per Troop; from 15 to 25 Troops in camp each week, depending upon the week - we draw a lot of out-of-area Troops). The committee will meet Friday afternoons, review the submissions, select a winner, and the award will be presented at Friday evening's closing campfire. I've drafted certificates and information fliersl, all of which explain the purpose of the award and who we (COINAF and Coin Community Forum; I've included CCF in the name due to its relationship with COINAF and its moral support) are and what we are about. BTW, the coins haven't arrived as of this moment (Mon 27 Jun PM), but they could show up at any moment.

P.S.Coins arrived yesterday (Mon) afternoon in good shape. Nice! There's gonna be five deserving Scouts who will be in for a pleasant surprise!

This is the latest update from Fred. Week one competition went very well! Please read on....Thanks again Fred!!!!!

First Week competition went very well! We had six nominees for the award (of nine Troops in Camp). With a great deal of difficulty, the committee selected Kevin Groover of Tr 45, Walton (Delaware Co.), NY. The Scoutmasters (or other adult leaders in camp) took their responsibilities seriously and wrote detailed nominations on behalf of their Scouts, submitting applications at the writing level of scholarship applications. Two of us narrowed the field down to three, then two others reviewed the applications until a consensus was reached.

One factor we attempted to avoid: judging the Scouts on the basis of the leaders' ability to write. Some of these leaders are quite erudite and we had to separate the flourishes from the facts. Due to the disparities of the narrative applications submitted, I'm gonna draft a form to level the playing field

The award winner, Kevin went above and beyond merely living up to the standards of the Scout Oath and Law with his cheerful willingness to help younger Scouts on his own time and his forethought during pre-Camp preparation for the Troop's participation in the Camp's theme this year, "Mountain Men". Within the broad definition of "achievement" we adopted, Kevin exceeded the award requirements. In fact, as a result of his outstanding achievement, he has been offered a job on the Camp Staff for later in the summer.

Some miscellaneous points and notes, not in any particular order: (1) Reference to the activity as a competition rather than a contest seems to have brought out the best in the Scouts and their leaders with their attitudes toward the competition at lofty and respectable levels rather than as just another contest for the "biggest". (2) The Camp administrators are tickled pink with this whole notion and have been bending over backwards to encourage participation; in the past, they've shown very conservative trends and are reluctant to attempt new activities. The fact that our competition is readily accepted bodes well for future ventures of a similar nature. I've advised them that this is a trial situation and that we are receptive to constructive criticism. (3) Given that the Camp's program is already over-programmed, meaning there is a lot for the Scouts and their leaders to do and their minds may be cluttered with all the other activities, we found that two reminder announcements at meals in the dining hall, one early in the week and the second at breakfast on Friday reinforces the posters and fliers already posted to keep the competition in their minds. (4) I'm trying to scrounge the time to write a news release for the local papers (two: one daily, one weekly; if I can get this first one done, I can use it for a template for the next four winners. Hi Folks, For those of you following the story here's Fred's latest update. Thanks again Fred!!!! The Awards are going well.....Week two Award winner, "Jeremy Smith, 17 of Troop 74, Hancock, NY."

Hello all,
The second week's achievement award process exceeded our expectations. We had nine of the 13 troops submit nominations for the award from which we selected Jeremy Smith, 17 of Troop 74, Hancock, NY. It is no coincidence that Jeremy is a Life Scout, soon to be Eagle. I had picked Jeremy from the group independently of the knowledge that he had been on Camp Staff the previous year, a fact which I had not known at the time.

Jeremy served as Acting Senior Patrol Leader (sorta Top Kick -First Sergeant- for you military types) during the Troop's stay at Camp. Among other achievements, he took the time to assist the younger first and second-year campers while countering the negative attitudes some of the other older Scouts brought with them to Camp to the degree that the the others reversed their approach to the week. From what I can tell, Jeremy essentially ran the Troop during the week while working on his own advancements, a remarkable achievement in and of itself. Until next time, Fred

I think this is an outstanding example of what WE as a group can accomplish with very little effort. The key word is EFFORT and as we have seen opportunities will eventually come to all of us in our own home area and we should take full advantage of them. I am still sitting on two rolls of Buffalo nickels that I promised Old Dan would go to children, hopefully this fall, and I have made contact with a local elementary teacher hoping to put a program together and use the nickels as awards for each and every child who participates. Not sure yet just how, what or why, we are going to proceed but the plan is in the works! May also use the coins during our fall festival and again it would involve small children. Will keep everyone informed on our final decision!

I know you didnt ask for Ideas, but somehow I cant help myself !!

I plan to do this this year at the Elementary School

I purchased a couple of hundred of the small white envelopes, I put wheats,Buffalo nickels, and a few mercs,Indian head cents quarters and and a few with certificates for franklins, kennedys, and Ike dollars.

a few Kids will be drawn each week to answer a question about History for a chance to draw from a bucket for the coins.

Simple and rewarding !!

I hope I didnt offend you by offering a suggestion !!

Another great update from Fred, Thanks Fred!!!

Third Week report: The deserving Scout for this week is Kevin W. Root, 14, a Life Scout (almost Eagle) from Troop 264, Altamount, NY, an out-of-Council Troop. (Henderson Scout Reservation attracts many such Troops from other Councils due to the quality of its program. Many of us such as myself (this is my 17th year since 1960, my first year) have been here on Staff since the late 1950s and while we are now aging, we still think young thanks to the kids; many other Camps are unable to maintain experienced adult staff beyond college age). Kevin is the first Scout to earn the Award who I had in one of my classes (Electronics Merit Badge) although that is not a factor in the decision-making. Kevin, despite his youth demonstrated a willingness to cope with adversity while at Camp and to willingly and voluntarily assist younger Scouts at the sacrifice of his own time when he could have been working on his own personal advancement. He is only a junior leader (Patrol Leader) rather than a Senior Patrol Leader, but assumed responsibilities beyond his Troop leadership position.

A trend is beginning to emerge. The greatest achievers seem to be the slightly older Scouts who are at or approaching Eagle Scout. This is no coincidence: almost by definition, Eagle Scouts and Eagle candidates are over-achievers. Virtually all male astronaut and fully 50% or more (has been as high as 90%) of West Point cadets are Eagle Scouts.

I am very pleased that the COINAF/CCF Achievement Award program is going so well!

Week 4 update from Fred.....

FOURTH WEEK REPORT:

First Class Scout Weston Johnson, 15, of Troop 37, Cherry Valley, NY earned the COINAF/CCF Achievement Award this week. (For those unaware of BSA's personal ranks, they are, in ascending order: Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, and Eagle. Each requires progressively more difficult criteria to attain the rank.0

Weston's outstanding achievements this past week included serving as the Troop's acting Senior Patrol Leader during the week, leading the Troop's preparation for the Camp's Thursday evening big event, the Rendezvous, part of the summer's theme of Mountain Man, voluntarily assisting the younger Scouts with their knot-tying, fire-starting, and wood-cutting, among other things. He had a positive attitude at all times and cheerfully maintained an excellent communication with the adult leaders and younger boys, demonstrating a maturity beyond his years.

We had six nominations for the award this week of a passible 12 Troops, so participation by the Scoutmasters in the competition was down somewhat from previous weeks. This may be attributed to the nature of the Troops attending Camp this past week in which there were a number of "poorer" units, i.e., they come from older, stagnant, less affluent communities; fully 50% of the villages and towns in the Council are classified to be within Appalachia with low incomes, little industry, high unemployment, and dwindling populations reflecting much of rural upstate NY (homes in this area may be purchased for less than $25K). Low application numbers may also be representative of some Scoutmasters' attitudes that none of their Scouts were deserving enough of the award and thus did not submit nominations.

This next (and last) week will prove interesting. This is traditionally the lightest week and we expect less than 75 Scouts in only six Troops in Camp. If no outstanding Scouts are nominated, we will not make the award and I'll return the coins to Mike or Susan. Alternatively, a number of the Scouts are returnees from previous weeks, staying in one of two or three provisional Troops in which Camp provides the adult leadership, so we may see some exceptional Scouts in the competition. While it's possible a previous winner may qualify for a second award, the probabilities are low. If this happens, I don't know what I'll do; suggestions/comments are welcome.

Respectfully submitted,
Fred

Hello Folks,

FIFTH (AND LAST) WEEK REPORT:

Despite low attendance this past week, we had four nominations (of six Troops) for the COINAF Achievement Award. Jarrett Larson, 17 and a Life Scout of Troop 2 Middleburgh, NY earned his certificate and the six US dollar coins. He is the Troop's Senior Patrol Leader and seemed to lead the Troop as much as, or maybe even more than his adult leaders (which is the way it's supposed to be, but often isn't). He led the Troop in hiking and camping while at Camp, encouraged and worked with first year Scouts in Camp activities, and, at the same time, earned two merit badges himself. The frosting on the cake was applied when he volunteered to be on the Camp Staff next week.

Webelos Week follows the regular camp season with two three-day sessions for the older Cub Scouts (Webelos I, boys entering fourth grade; Webelos II, boys entering 5th grade). In no small sense, Jarrett is greatly helping the staff since we are traditionally short-handed that week.

In summary, the COINAF Achievement Award program here at Henderson exceeded our greatest expectations. As time and opportunity permit, I will submit follow-up reports and ideas.

Thanks, Fred
