Rothenburg on the Tauber, Romantic City of the Middle Ages. I've been there, and can say that's a true statement. You've seen it too, if you've seen the movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, especially the aerial views at the end. Spared any destruction, it's been a major tourist destination since World War II, with over sixty years of tourist souvenirs like this one sold there. I think it's unlikely that a tourist souvenir would be made of gold, though. Seems to me a gold medallion of this diameter should be about twice as heavy, don't you think?

I stand corrected. I guess there were Rothenburger token-makers who felt there was a market for this item in gold.

Guess that is the version from the 1970s - well, that one was filmed in Munich, and the city view you mentioned is Nördlingen. ;) As for the medal, I agree - does not look like gold to me. But of course I may be wrong. The second link that platinrubel posted, by the way, seems to be exactly the piece that romeo RHD has.

Rats. I'm not doing well with this thread.
I seem to have been taken in by what appears to be a common urban legend about the place; fed to me by Germans, no less! Good to be set straight after so many years.
