I picked up this medal at an antique shop while on vacation. Does anyone know when it was made, if it's silver or what it's worth? I've searched all over and can't find much of any information on it. All I found were these 2 pictures of it and very little info. Here's the web link to the site that had a little info. It's about 1/3 down the page and the post was dated March 7, 2011 at 6:58 PM: http://medalblog.wordpress.com/2010...medal-worth/

I haven't seen this one before, but as it is marked "Sterling" it would appear that it is a silver medal with a composition of 92.5% silver and 7.5% of some other metal (copper perhaps).

Thanks for the reply. It is made out of silver. It's the size of a quarter so I think it may have been made out of an old silver quarter. I just cant seem to find any information on it or any others that are for sale anywhere to get an idea of how much it's possibly worth.

Hey I remember these pics, in fact I took them lol. I sold this on ebay 2 years ago, went for a little over $40. It was made during WWII and meant as a morale booster to be sent to soldiers.

It wouldn't have been struck over a quarter in any case. Firstly, a quarter is 900 fine, not 925, so it would have to be marked "coin silver" not "sterling" ; secondly, at the prices of silver then prevailing, the value as a coin would have been twice or thrice the value of the metal.

Plus if I remember correctly it was a little larger in diameter than a standard silver quarter.

Numismat, yes they are your pictures. I tried getting a good picture of the one I bought but was on vacation and didn't have my USB microscope with me. Since I couldn't get a good picture I used the ones I found on the medalblog site which were yours. Thanks everyone for the info you provided. At least now I know it was from the WWII time period and that it wasn't made from a silver quarter. I got it for just $6 and it's in almost the same grade as the one you had except maybe a little more tarnished. I don't know too much about medals and tokens but thought it was a nice piece so I picked it up.
Thanks again !!
