Upon further inspection I found that there was no third D . This is in fact a D over D only . I find it interesting that the first punch is thinner than the second punch . Can some one tell me how this could happen ? Any other information I could receive would be greatly appreciated .

The die is a D/D/D. The lower RPM is missing because of die state. When they get into the MDS and later examples it disappears from the die. Thus the EDS examples show the lower RPM and are worth more money.

Coop is dead on. The northern secondary mintmart is thinner than the primary mintmark because it was punched into the die with less pressure.

Later die state. The die is aging. You can see his wrinkles as the die flow is reaching the rim. The devices are weakening on all devices that face the rim. (This happened a lot on the 1950's coins as they were continued to be used past there normal life span.)
