Anyone have any idea of the value or history behind this coin? It's been in my family's collection for years, rather nice looking.

Hi Kaz, welcome
It is from Venice (Italian state). 11,36 g silver .250 for grade fine (probably grade of your coin or less) $15 . I don't know more.

Nice piece - for some reason it reminded me of the Austrian symbol.

It is the Austrian symbol. Venice was an independent republic up until 1797, when Napoleon's armies invaded. Shortly afterwards, for reasons which remain obscure, France handed Venice over to the Austrian Empire. They gave it back to the French in 1805, who merged it into Napoleon's Kingdom of Italy.

(Edited to remove redundant duplication which was redundantly duplicated.)

It's a shame such a stunning coin is only worth $15 or £7 in my case. So would you say it's a F or VG, it is rather flat on one side.

Austrian occupation coinage, Krause lists it as C#164.1. VG.

I have the same coin, we have found it while we were fixing roof.
Our house is about 300 years old.
I can't believe that the worth of this coin is just 15$.
Either way I wouldn't sell it.

Hi Kaz,
That is a beautiful coin. Thank you for sharing it with us. Tell me, are you considering selling it?
