What's the deal with this? I did some reading up. It appear that currently at least 2 of 30 or so 1877 Indian Head cents on ebay are forgeries, after a quick survey. People seem to be bidding on them. The reverses appear wrong and on one the 77 is way too narrow. The sellers both have limited feedback. Any insight? It is depressing.

Sellers are either shady or honestly don't know what they have.
The buyer is simply inexperienced in spotting these fakes.
I report them often on ebay.

There is a "report item" on the auction page, middle right hand side, click that.
Follow steps. It a pull down menu. Put what's the most appropriate for category.
ebay will then look into it.

A fake counterfeit?

Does that make it real?

For reporting fake coins there is a much better link. The "report auction" link that is in the auction just adds you report to the end of the line of all the other reports from all the other categories. ebay has a specific page for reporting problems with coin auctions and reports there get reviewed and acted upon much quicker. It also lets you report multiple auctions at the same time, plus lets you explain what the problem is.

1877 Indian cent is one of those you have to study the die characteristics on if you are buying a raw coin or you WILL get burned. The most obvious way to GONG one for being non-genuine is to look at both of the sevens. If they are identical in shape (like the way the nines are on 1999 Lincoln Cents) then walk away.
