Hi,
Just wondering what others think of the coin part of the HSN?
I watched it for a little while the other day, saw what I thought was a bargain or two, but realized that if everything looks too good to be true than either:
1) It is or 2) I'm not experienced enough to tell the difference or 3) All of the above.
I choose #3.
For instance they had the 2013 American Eagle West Point Two-Coin Silver Set (S40) at close to $300.00 it's sold out at the mint, and I would love to have one just not for that price and I don't know the quality or sellers/HSN reputation.
Just wondering what others thought about the HSN coins and the quality reputation of the sellers etc.
Thanks.

If you are willing to spend close to $300, they can be found on ebay from good sellers for that price and your choice of slabbed graded PF/SP 70 or sealed in the factory mint box. I just got a set for less than 300 already slabbed 70's. Just my $0.02 Edit: I realize that was only an example that you gave, but basically just saying I have never found something on HSN that I couldnt source elsewhere. I have never been a fan of home shopping channels, but who knows, maybe I am missing out?

I believe HSN is regarded as the worst place to buy coins/PM's. If you put some effort into shopping the major online vendors and ebay you can definitely do better than HSN. Caution is however necessary when swimming in the ebay shark tank. It's the primary global refuge of scammers, copies, fakes, counterfeits, etc. If you buy anything there, always pay by CC through PayPal to maximize your protection against the bad dogs and their wares. I'd also suggest putting some time and effort into window-shopping LCS's in your area. Some aren't any good, some are OK and some are great. I'm lucky to have a really good one near me. They frequently have the best deals on a lot of what's of interest to me. Shows can be a good source, too, but... You need to know what you're doing, what you're after, what it should cost and you need to avoid impulse purchases and thinking something is your "last chance at a deal like this."

Thank you, thats kind of what I thought, I forgot about my LCS we only have one I've been in once or twice they seem kina of stand offish probably because I was just looking and trying to get a feel for the place, I'm sure a few small purchases would help get the conversation moving.

HSN shows some cool stuff but its almost always overpriced. The raw 2013 sets on ebay are selling basically for the mint issue price. The other thing they do a lot is sell modern 70s from ANACS at PCGS top dollar which is too high for them. The show its sell is cool and the guy is pretty knowledgeable but hes also a good salesmen. Just remember whenever someone is telling you what a great deal theyre giving you ask yourself why theyre supposedly doing that. What do they know you dont?

I agree with basebal - the shows are cool and I watched the really big show when they listed the 2013 WP set... was entertaining. I'd be skeptical of the $300 set off them though. If it isn't a graded set - I'd suspect they already ran them by the grader and got sent back as not making a MS69-MS70 grading - and the set just was returned to them. So your not going to get top tier coins at a top tier price. ebay is a good place to buy these - but I'm not sure I'd buy them right now - seems to be a lot of price gouging going on to me. Unles of course you can find a set near original price - from a private seller not a large 2nd party seller.

Unfortunately one of the guys who delivers packages to us at work buys whatever Eagles HSN is selling and eats up everything they say. At least he sticks with MS70 and PF70's but believes the hype about first strike, early release, and first day of issues labels. I tried to tell him once but he was sold on what they were peddling so I let it be. He does have a nice 2013 PF70 Gold Eagle set (all of them) and a 2012 PF70 San Francisco Eagle set and the 2013 RP / EU70 Eagle set and this one he showed me the other day with all of the West Point Eagles.

I do like listening to Mike on the show...he is very knowledgeable. If I'm awake when it's on TV (they are usually on pretty late), I usually sign on to HSN through their app and make comments while their live. I've had a few "honorable mentions"...kinda cool!
I have never bought anything though because it is way overpriced.

I do know one of their large sources for getting tons of US Mint coins. Believe me they are making a killing on everyone they sell! 50% minimum profit. Gotta pay for the TV time and that's not cheap. They are pretty knowledgeable, but their prices are a lot higher than most coin shows or local dealers, shop around a bit. My 2¢ worth. Then again, I'm slowly moving away from any US coin made after 1880's, and have been bitten by the EAC bug, so that means time to start looking into buying coins from the 1700's now, ouch to my wallet. I leave the modern stuff to the rest of you.

HSN is famous for charging extremely high prices, often for things that aren't particularly rare. If you are interested in the 2013 set, you can get it from APMEX for only $180: http://www.apmex.com/product/76075/...et-w-box-coaAs others have mentioned, you can probably find it for less if you check ebay, since APMEX isn't exactly known for their bargain prices (although they do have a good reputation for service). Good luck!

Very true I guess I'll watch it more to learn somethings I don't know, (being new at collecting that's a lot) I think if I really want this I may just pay for them already graded, that will be a first for me also buying an already graded pre slabbed coin. It's tough being new at this Even learning to quote correctly.
