I know people have asked on numerous occasions for judgement on their 1888 50 Cent with regard to the obverse. Despite poring through those threads, I am still unsure about my coin. Can you folks please lend a hand?

From what I've seen, it appears the upper lip on Obv 2 forms a right angle with the bottom edge of the nose (like my coin) while Obv 3 opens up wider. Is this correct?

I'm also thinking that it would grade at VF-20. Thoughts?

Cheers,
~Nicholas

I'm thinking 3 because of the hair below the crown and the line at the corner of the mouth. I claim no expertise though! :-)

AWWWWW my favorite coins ..what you have is the OBV3 type.. never mind the lip...Look at the right ribbon and how it is formed.. Also the eyelid on this is T3. ..Too bad there is a little rim damage , not that bad though.. As for grade ..I would say VF 20 all day long.. ICCS might knock it down because of the rims.... How is the rev?
Hope it helps

For OBV2 there is quite a smooth transition from forhead to crown. For OBV3 the lower corner of the crown juts out a little from the forehead line.
I agree with artdio,OBV3,VF20 depending on reverse

I'm still not seeing it when looking at other coins that are supposedly "confirmed" Obv2. Oh well, here's the reverse:

nandemo1,can you post a pic of the obverse with different lighting? The glare obscures some of the markers.

The ribbon on this 1888 is different form the above Obverse.
This is possibly an OBV 2.

Sure, I can take some different shots with the USB scope and post them. I'll work on the lighting and try taking closeups of the ribbon and face.

Are there any resources showing the variants side by side, pointing out the differences?

Here's a few closeups of the same coin. I adjusted the angles slightly on the two forehead and two ribbon shots to get different lighting on the key areas.
