In 41 years of business I have bought two of these in deals and I have no idea what it is. I know its not gold. The obv of the coin is larger than the rev, the coin is pushed into the silver square around it and it is some type of metal as well. It weighs 0.90 troy ounces.

Why do you say you know it's NOT gold? Without actually seeing this in person that sure looks like an 1859 double eagle to me, the weight is off though.

The base metal shows through around the letters and the front of the coin is a few mm bigger than the rev.

Sorry, all I have for you are guesses.

It could be a weight - I know the weight does not match a solid gold coin, but it could be intended for use with an asymmetric balance.

It could be made for insertion into a book cover or similar object, as an ornament. How thick is the metallic square?
