Dear Forum members,

I have these 2 francs coin in my possession. It is a 2 francs of the Chamber of Commerce beaten in 1926. This 2 francs, however, two stamps smashed. 2 times a lotharisch cross and this seems to be. A French resistance movement RGK called? Who can tell me more and whether this coin is rare, because these stamps.

I hope to hear from you,
Best wishes,
Vincent

The Cross of Lorraine is a distinctive mark of the maquisards.
I need to check Dr. Brunk's articles on political counterstamps, in recent numbers of the NI Bulletin, to see if he says anything more about it.

That's interesting--my first impression was the resistance too.
If it was, it might not have been used as money, but as a kind of ID?

1926 is a scarce date in its own right - mintage 2,962,351 and valued in Monnaie Magazine at €25 F and €40 VF. I've collected French coins for years but never seen one with this countermark. These Chamber of Commerce coins were in circulation until 1949 so I imagine the counterstamp would have been applied during WW2.

Dear Publius, Dvcollector, Numisrob and Fioti,
Thank you alot for taking a look and trying to help me determine this coin. It is indeed an rare coin because of these stamps. I see in one reaction maybe it is used during world war 2?
And an sign of the maquisards . On the paper from the One I bought this coin said the Movement called RGK . Nevver heard of it but maybe it helps you to determine the stamps...
Thanks alot for the answers in already 1 day,
Best wishes,
Vincent

Iss there anymore information maybe available about this coin? I had some contact with an collector for coins from France. And he said it is probably stamped after the war. Because it was to dangerous during the war.. If the nazi's saw it they would eliminate you..

Hey Aernout,
You are right, it is that cross. I wonder the stamps in the coin look like the kind of stamps the use on coins more often. Instead of some stamp they use like once or twice. It looks like an more professional stamp.. So I though maybe there are more with the same stamp and more information about it.
Mvg,
Vincent

This sheds a bit of light:

http://www.mcsearch.info/record.html?id=261565

The Cross of Lorraine, symbolizing the Alsace-Lorraine region of France,
makes sense when you know that most of the region was annexed by Germany.
If you turn the coin 90 degrees the cross appears to be enclosed by the letter "V"
for victory (victoire.)

It is probably called the Croix de Charles DeGaulle because if his role during the war.

And about that word maquisards: "Swamp People" would be a good translation.

As for where it circulated I would guess the unoccupied regions of southern France.
And as a sign of loyalty to Free France, also quite likely.
