I saw in a previous post someone mentioned that a copy stand works well when taking photo's of coins. I see that there is quite a range in prices that you can pay for these things. I've anywhere from $15 to $850 so far. I expect the cheaper ones probably aren't that great. Can someone recommend a good one to use that doesn't cost so much?

An appropriate answer to your question depends on the type of camera you're using to shoot. If it's a small point-and-shoot, you won't need to be far from the coin and one of the cheaper copystands will suffice. A dSLR with a dedicated lens will need a beefier unit, and one which can offer you as much as 24" of vertical to get the camera a sufficient distance from the subject.

Either way, your best bet is probably ebay for a used unit - quality copystands are horribly overpriced, in my opinion.

Thanks for the tip. I have a dSLR camera. I just got back from the Camera supplies store and the guy there has an old one at home for sale. He's had it for a while and said that it's a good one, maybe overkill for what I want to do. 100 bucks. Comes with the lights on the side, said it was $1800 new.

He is a photographer so I'm thinking I will take my camera with me when I go to look at and try to get some tips on photographing coins. I may many coins to photograph and share on this site.

That sounds like your deal. Just make sure you can get the camera's mounting stud no less than 18" off the base, preferably more. With something like a 100mm Macro lens - should you have/purchase one - you're going to need the front of the lens about 12" away from a Morgan-sized coin.

Don't hesitate to ask all your questions regarding coin imaging here. That's the purpose of this forum.

Look for used copy stands - since you will be stripping of the enlarging head (that's the big difference in pricing). I find them all the time for free in places like Craigslist or oat camera stores, most everyone has gone digital and not much call for a big, bulky piece of equipment laying around. There was a very recent post on this very subject.

You could also make your own copy stand from a heavy base board and some pipe fittings on the cheap. The tough part is the holder for the camera, that is where the expense will lay.

Here is the copy stand that I just bought. It may be a bit overkill for coins, but I think it'll do the trick.
Now I just have to figure out my camera to take a decent photo. I have the Canon T2i in case anyone has the same camera and has some tips. The one photo I took looked a little yellow from the side lights I think.
