http://www.ebay.com/itm/EXTREMELY-R...031339c#shIdNot! The seller is a member of this forum and has fallen victim of Charlton's confusing method of identifying obverses. For OBV1 25cents,The I in GRATIA points between denticles, always, without exception,no other Victorian 25cent obverse shares this feature. "Dipping" is not considered cleaning... -from PCGS website

Thanks for pointing that out DBM, I've been searching ebay 1800s for some good buys, would have been pretty disappointed if Id bought that one.

So Charlton's guide is wrong ? I have looked at so so many others on ebay and in hand and have noticed many different things... Off center I to the left in Gratia , to the right and also pointing direct , and in between denticles. The example you mention here is off center to the right as can be seen in the tips of the bottom serrif , therefor making it in between...If it is not pointing direct to the denticle , then whats it called 1 or 2 ? BUT when you check the ribbons they are different for both Obv 1 and Obv 2 which clearly shows the difference .

Interesting that there is a disclaimer at the bottom suggesting that he "might" have it wrong...

I wouldn't advertize it as A and then say that it could also be the lesser B.....at the bottom.. If you learn later that you're probably advertizing it wrong,..then you change it in the title.. ....That's what I would do anyway...

You should also know that once bids are placed you cannot change the title... Also the listing was active for a few days before the info came to light..So the correct thing to do was to revise it in the only way that can be done...

Except in the case of repunched letters of individual dies, the relationship of letters to denticles does not vary for any given obverse. The I in GRATIA for OBV1 will always point between denticles, for OBV2 the I will always point to a denticle.Any variance you see is optical illusion due to die or coin wear. PS The coin in the ebay listing also lacks the prominent bump in the the front of the maltese cross at the front of the crown which is also a feature found only on OBV1.

You could always cancel the item and relist it with the correct title.

Yes that could be done , but at same time as DBM said " Any variance you see is optical illusion due to die or coin wear."
Says who ? In hand the I is not worn and is in fact almost completely in between.... So what would that be ? And how do you explain then the difference in the ribbons ? and on another note if sold and graded and not as stated the problem would be fixed without hesitation...
