I'm surprised they bothered with an edge treatment, especially one so elaborate. I can't imagine there was much risk of counterfeiting such gigantic coppers, & who ever heard of clipping base-metal coins?
The die tooling is pretty elaborate too--I guess practicality wasn't the first objective? That's a very nice and dramatic coin--I'm partial to big coppers.
thanks everyone. I'm not really familiar with the type and was slightly nervous, glad it's all ok. I'm usually an ancient coin guy, but this one is one of my favorites.

Here goes - sorry, photos not as good as I hoped. This is the 1789 detector find:
... and this is a 1790 off-centre struck specimen I picked up a while ago in a dealer's junk bin. The coin isn't holed - a high spot on one of the leaves seems to have reflected on the photo...
Here are the edges - no prize for guessing which coin is which!
