I recently picked up a batch of large cents off ebay, this 1896 piece stood out as the V in Victoria extends up into the denticles and down into the beads. There's also some flaring on the I in Regina which extends up to the denticles. Unfortunately the coin has also been scratched up quite a bit but I always like picking up these old pieces with a bit of character to them!

I love large cents as well. What you have are late stage die cracks extending from the denticle to the letters. A new die will produce a near perfect coin, but as production continues, small cracks appear in the dies and as a result it shows up on a coin as raised metal. As they continue to use the die, the crack spreads and get wider and deeper. Eventually the die is replaced with a new one.

Thanks to all for the comments, there is definitely a little hat on the E in DEI and a bit tailing off the D in CANADA.

The mark running back from the eye is another one of the scratches on the coin, these markings didn't turn out that well in the photos. All the scratches end with a pit in the coin, the best examples of this are the one running across the upper lip and ending on the chin and another just to the right of that.

The close up photos were actually taken through my loupe and making sure I did enough shots to get a steady hand and the angle right!
